What's the best way to shine shoes?

I not only have a homecoming dance in a week or so, but I also want to join the Air Force Academy.





So, I need some really good techniques with which to make my dress shoes/combat boots VERY SHINY!!





My mom works for the state police, and she said in the academy, you have to have your shoes so shiny that you can see your reflection in them.





I'm not sure HOW TO GET THEM THAT SHINY lol so if you can help me out, I'd really appreciate it.
