Hairspray on ballet shoes?

My last dance teacher used to spray hairspray on the ribbons of our ballet shoes. She said it made them stay in longer. they did seem to but i was wondering how this worked and if anyone had tips for canvas tap, leather ballet and jazz shoes and how to make them look cleaner for a show I am in next week.

Hairspray on ballet shoes?
Trying spray painting them. That seems to help the most.
Reply:the hair spray harderns the ribbon when tired around you foot which prevents it from becoming undone while dancing! it acts like a glue!
Reply:the hairspray acts like a glue/starch and makes the ribbon stiff

cleaning your shoes every time you use them makes them last longer

a damp cloth on the canvas shoes will help remove light marks but darker ones you will have to sponge with a small amount of soapy water, and leave to dry naturally

leather need to be polished regularly and dyed if the scuffs are bad
Reply:for the ballet shoes, u can throw them in the washing machine and let them air dry they really nice and clean after that !
Reply:i do ballet. yes if u put hairspary on your ribbons they will stay tucked in longer,it works a lot. how it works i am not quite sure but i l think it has to do with the stickyness of the hairspary (it also make the ribbons stiffer). canvas i am quessing to wash them, leather and jazz get a damp rag and clean it
Reply:yer, i do tap (and use to do ballet) and everyone i know uses hairspray to stop shoes slipping. normal shoe polish (but not to much) is great on most shoes.
Reply:I do that as well, so do many of my dance friends. Before a performance, I spray hairspray on the ribbons after tying them, right where you tuck them in. It keeps the ribbons tucked in neatly and prevents them from sticking out during a show.

However, I've never heard of hairspray on other shoes. I use canvas ballet slippers, so I wouldn't know... when you sew them in, they should stay.

Hope that helped you! =)
Reply:get some ballet shoe spray paint from a dance supply store. You just spray it on, let them dry, and it looks like you have new shoes!
Reply:for jazz shoes i polish them...are yours leather?? mine are...and i just use ordinary black shoes polish and it makes them look so nice and shiny :o)

good luck in your show
