I know this question is asked A LOT, but i need help and advice. I have taken 1 year of jazz, 1 year of tap, and 8 years of ballet. I love dancing, and I want more experience. Somone suggeted trying out for our dance team once i get to highschool. To, me this sounds fun. Even if don't make it, i still will have a new experience. What sould I bring to the try outs and what should I expect? Will jazz shoes work best? What is the best kind of clothing to wear? Thanks SO much. I hope my question isn't confusing!
High School Dance TEam Auditions?
You experience in dance will help you a lot. Your ballet background should give you the technique to be able to pull through. However, most high school dance teams participate in jazz/funk which isn't really as elegant or structured as ballet is. That might be a significant difference you see. Try-outs usually consist of warm-ups. They want to give you a feel of what you should expect when you really are on the team. Then you'll probably learn a combination and a routine. Combinations and progressions really allow them to see where you are technique wise. The routine can be a few counts of 8, probably around 1:00-1:30 long. They sometimes might move fast to see how well you can pick up choregraphy. As for what to bring, bring your A game. If a dancer has confidence, you can really tell and it makes you stand out. They'll see that in you. I wear Bloch Black Jazz shoes and they are wonderful, but you might want to see if your school requires a certain brand or type. Clothing is usual dance attire. Leotards, tights, and hair pulled back, but you also want to wear something that is comfortable and allows you to move. Good luck, I hope this helped!
Reply:What to wear:
Wear Jazz shoes, but bring all of your shoes just in case. You could wear a leotard and shorts, or jazz pants. I suggest you don't wear a tshirt as they may not be able to see your body working properly.
What to expect:
In your addition they would have prepared a routine and you basically have to perform it. You will probably have to perform it in small groups. I suggest while learning it, get a spot right near the center front-trust me, learning stuff at the back is horrible!
I hope this answers your questions-and good luck!
Reply:You should wear something cute over tights and leotard, incase they want you to take off the cute over clothes and wear tights and leotard. Wear fun colors so you stand out. I used to coach HS dance team, so I know it's a great way to meet people and become "popular". Go for it!
